As we read through Exodus and, periodically, in other books of the Bible, we encounter the phrase “God hardened the heart” of someone. How should we understand this phrase, and does it have an important meaning to us theologically?

This week we celebrate our Nation’s Independence, and while we are experiencing many challenges, both to our Nation and to our spiritual lives, we must take time to remember our past and the sacrifices of those who gave us the freedoms we have today.

Several passages in the Bible identify a time of evaluation of believers in front of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is important for us to understand what the Bible says about this evaluation.

The author of Job records that God’s “wrath” was “aroused” toward Eliphaz (v. 7). While the English translation “wrath” or “anger” is an acceptable one, it can mislead the reader to believe that God can be wrathful or angry.

We often wonder how God communicated to His human creation prior to the text of Scripture. Yet Scripture is very clear how that happened; we just tend to read or skip over it.

Recently I officiated for a graveside memorial service for a family member of a friend. The deceased was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ; therefore, he is now in heaven with his Savior. It is important for us to be prepared for the death of family members or friends.

The last verse of 2 Thessalonians 3 refers to the, “grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.” We must not treat lightly the word “grace,” because grace is a concept that underpins our Christian lives.

Labor Day is always celebrated on the first Monday in September. We view it as a holiday—cessation from work, a day to do nothing, to spend with family, to play sports or pursue activities that generally have little or no meaning regarding labor. Essentially, it is a meaningless holiday. Why do Americans celebrate this meaningless holiday? Why do we celebrate any holiday?

The question often asked is how can a loving God send someone to the Lake of Fire? The answer is that God is more than a loving God. He is also a righteous and just God.

The reason socialism opposes religion, for us Christianity, is that it cannot control the individual’s belief, which places faith in God, not government.

Have you ever been around someone who was very proud of what they have accomplished? There is nothing wrong with personal achievements, with being pleased that we are able to do and do well. But more often than not, they are precisely that: human accomplishments.

As we observe Independence Day and celebrate the significance of what it has meant to Americans for more than two centuries, John Adams, one of the authors of our Declaration of Independence and second president, said, “… the day ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty.”

“Pray without ceasing” is a command to have an attitude of persistent and continual communication with God.

We can be content knowing that God’s provisions are permanent and sufficient for every circumstance.
