How Should Christians Think About Artificial Intelligence?

By - Pastor Freddy Cortez, National Capital Bible Church

We are living in a time when human connections are quietly being replaced by artificial voices. Artificial intelligence is advancing at a pace no one imagined even ten years ago. For many, it has become a tool for quick answers, problem-solving, and even companionship. Some are leaning on it as a type of therapy and even companionship. But as Christians, we need to pause, slow down, and ask—how should we think about this?

Real Benefits

I have been listening to men like John Lennox—a faithful Christian and sharp thinker—discuss both the possibilities and dangers of artificial intelligence. I’ve also tested it myself. Just today, a friend at church told me he snapped a picture of his CPAP machine and asked an AI program how to adjust the pressure. It gave him exact instructions. He often asks it how to fix things, and it guides him step by step. That’s a real, practical benefit. I’ve read and heard of people using AI to troubleshoot appliances, summarize information when time is short, draft everyday communication, organize schedules, and even plan meals or trips. These conveniences can save time and energy for what truly matters—prayer, Bible study, family discipleship, and fellowship. Proverbs 18:15 reminds us: “The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.” Wisdom uses tools but also knows when to be careful.

Where We Must Be Careful

I cannot recommend AI as a replacement for a solid Bible study tool. Too often it reflects a general Lordship/Reformed framework, which can mislead those not grounded in Free Grace biblical truth. For that reason, it should not be a substitute for proven resources like Logos or Accordance. Logos has integrated AI features into its platform, and that can be helpful. The difference is that Logos is filtered and theologically structured, drawing only from the library you’ve chosen. Most AI platforms, by contrast, pull from everywhere—good sources and bad alike. Proverbs 14:15 warns: “The simple believes every word, but the prudent considers well his steps.” If you are mature in doctrine, you may navigate AI carefully. If not, it could steer you off course.

Why Prayer Is Better

AI can fix a CPAP machine or locate a biblical city, but it cannot answer the deepest questions of life. Only God can.

  • Why am I here? Psalm 139:13–14 says you were formed by God with care and purpose.

  • What is my purpose? Ephesians 2:10 tells us we are His workmanship, created for good works.

  • What happens after I die? John 11:25–26 gives Christ’s promise of eternal life.

  • Does my life matter? Matthew 10:29–31 assures us that God knows even the number of our hairs.

  • Can I be forgiven? Ephesians 1:7 promises redemption and forgiveness in Christ.

  • And for believers who stumble, 1 John 1:9 offers daily restoration—not for salvation, but for fellowship.

A Warm Invitation

If you’ve been talking to AI, let me encourage you to begin talking to God instead. He is not a machine. He is the living God who hears, knows, and loves. He still speaks through His Word—what we call Bible Doctrine. If you are not yet a believer, consider God’s invitation in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” To believe is to be persuaded that Christ alone gives everlasting life to all who believe in Him.

A Challenge to Believers

If you already belong to Christ, live for His cause. Don’t waste your life chasing what cannot satisfy. Use every tool wisely, but let your loyalty belong fully to Him. When it’s all said and done, one thing will matter—were we faithful to the Lord who saved us? So, remain steadfast in the Word, keep your eyes on Christ, and remember—prayer, not programming, will always be the most life-giving conversation you will ever have.
