Steadfast in the Word…
A Study Connecting the Teaching of Christ with Paul’s Explanation of the Spiritual Condition of Man
Adapted and expanded from our recent Men’s Prayer Breakfast study
Text: 1 Corinthians 2:14–3:3 (NKJV)
Resolution
Paul describes three spiritual conditions in relation to God’s truth. These are not three kinds of salvation, but three states of spiritual perception and growth. When placed alongside Jesus’ Parable of the Soils, we see why some respond to truth and grow while others remain stagnant.
The apostle Paul’s teaching in 1 Corinthians provides a helpful framework for understanding the spiritual life. While salvation itself is secured by faith in Christ alone, the experience of spiritual growth varies greatly among believers. Some believers steadily grow in their understanding of God’s Word, while others remain spiritually immature or distracted by competing influences. Paul’s categories help us understand why this happens.
1. The Natural Man (Unbeliever) — 1 Corinthians 2:14
Greek: ψυχικός (psuchikos) — “soulish,” without spiritual life.
Does not receive the things of the Spirit of God.
Spiritual truth appears foolish.
He cannot know them because they are spiritually discerned.
Key Insight: The problem is not intelligence but spiritual capacity. Without spiritual life, truth cannot be perceived.
Connection — Parable of the Soils
Hard Soil — Matthew 13:19
The seed falls on hardened ground.
The Word is heard but never penetrates.
The truth is quickly removed.
Meaning: No spiritual life leads to no reception of truth.
2. The Carnal Believer — 1 Corinthians 3:1–3
Greek: σαρκικός (sarkikos) — flesh‑dominated thinking.
Paul calls them brethren and in Christ — believers.
Yet they are babes in Christ, needing milk instead of solid food.
Their lives show envy, strife, and divisions.
Paul’s Diagnosis: They are “walking like mere men.” Their thinking is governed by human viewpoint.
Free Grace Insight: Carnality does not erase salvation, but it prevents spiritual growth.
Connection — Parable of the Soils
Rocky Soil — Matthew 13:20–21
The seed sprouts quickly.
But there is no depth of root.
Pressure exposes instability.
Thorny Soil — Matthew 13:22
Growth begins.
Competing influences choke development.
Fruitfulness is restricted.
Meaning: Life is present, but growth is hindered.
3. The Spiritual Believer — 1 Corinthians 2:15–16
Greek: πνευματικός (pneumatikos) — responsive to the Spirit and Word.
Receives and values divine truth.
Evaluates life through Scripture.
Develops the mind of Christ.
Key Principle: Spiritual maturity begins with thinking aligned with God’s viewpoint.
Connection — Parable of the Soils
Good Soil — Matthew 13:23
The Word is received.
The Word is understood.
The Word produces fruit.
Meaning: Truth received, truth applied, spiritual growth.
4. Profound Truths Often Missed
Inability vs. unwillingness (1 Corinthians 2:14): The natural man lacks spiritual capacity.
Possession vs. application (1 Corinthians 2:16-3:1): Believers possess the mind of Christ but may fail to live by it.
Carnality distorts judgment: Envy and rivalry reshape how believers evaluate life.
Gifts do not equal maturity (1 Corinthians 1:7; 3:1).
The battlefield is the mind: Growth rises or falls on thinking shaped by truth.
5. Stages of Spiritual Response to Truth
Natural Man — cannot receive spiritual truth (1 Corinthians 2:14).
Spiritual Infant — babes in Christ needing milk (1 Corinthians 3:1-2).
Carnal Believer — saved yet stalled under fleshly influence (1 Corinthians 3:1-3).
Spiritual Believer — growing with the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:15-16).
6. The Three Conditions (Spiritual Readiness — Firearms Illustration)
Condition 1 — The Natural Man (Unarmed)
Status: No Magazine / Empty Weapon
Unregenerate; without spiritual life.
Spiritual truth appears foolish.
Lacks the capacity to understand divine truth.
Meaning: Like a soldier with no weapon and no training, the natural man has no ability to engage the spiritual realities of life.
Condition 2 — The Carnal Believer (Armed but Untrained)
Status: Magazine Inserted but Not Chambered
A believer — “brethren… in Christ.”
Yet spiritually immature — “babes in Christ.”
Influenced by the flesh — envy, strife, and divisions.
Meaning: The believer possesses the resources of the Christian life, but immaturity and divided thinking limit effectiveness.
Condition 3 — The Spiritual Believer (Combat Ready)
Status: Magazine Inserted and Round Chambered (Ready)
Responsive to the Word and the Spirit.
Evaluates life through Scripture.
Developing the mind of Christ.
Meaning: Through doctrine and spiritual growth, the believer becomes stable, disciplined, and ready for life’s realities.
Bottom Line
Salvation is secured by faith in Christ alone, but spiritual growth is not automatic. The real battle of the Christian life is the battle for the mind and heart in response to God’s truth.
Invitation to Believe
If you have never believed in Jesus Christ, the Bible presents a clear invitation. Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Christ died for our sins and rose again so that eternal life could be given freely to all who believe in Him. The moment a person believes in Christ alone for salvation, they receive eternal life and become a child of God.
Exhortation for Believers
For those who have already believed in Christ, Paul’s teaching challenges us to examine our spiritual condition. Every believer possesses eternal life, but spiritual maturity develops as we consistently receive and apply God’s Word. As our thinking becomes aligned with the truth of Scripture, the Spirit of God produces stability, discernment, and growth. The call for every believer is to move beyond spiritual stagnation and allow God’s truth to shape the mind and direct the life.
